Nordic and Baltic university rectors meet today for the first time – the topic of this historic conference is sustainable development

 | Press releases and News

International cooperation between universities to address burning societal issues is taking a big step forward.

More than eighty rectors from Nordic and Baltic universities and representatives of councils of rectors will meet today, 12 May 2021, at a virtual conference to intensify their cooperation on sustainable development. The aim is to share information on the efforts made by universities in each country to promote responsibility and to reflect on the role of universities in the sustainability transition.

The event is being arranged by Universities Finland Unifi. The event is part of the Finnish Presidency 2020–2021 of the Association of Nordic University Rectors Conferences (NUS).

– We look forward to a lively discussion with our international colleagues. Sustainable development is a common goal of the Nordic and Baltic countries, and universities can play an important role in promoting it through research and education. We hope that the conference will serve as a starting point for diverse future cooperation, says Moira von Wright, Rector of Åbo Akademi University, President of the NUS Network.

You can follow the conference on Twitter with the tag #NordicBalticRectors and share your own thoughts on the theme of the day. The event’s website features video greetings from the participating countries, highlighting joint actions by universities in each country to promote sustainable development.

– Universities are key players in building a responsible future. In Finland, universities published 12 ambitious theses last year, which will be used to accelerate sustainable development. The conference now being held is a natural continuation of the sustainability work of the Finnish university field, says Tanja Risikko, Executive Director of Unifi.
