UK university leaders will be visiting Helsinki on March 19th. The group will meet with the Finnish leaders of higher education and research to discuss Brexit.
There will also be an open panel discussion ”Brexit – Implications for Higher Education and Research” at Think Corner (Tiedekulma). It analyses the consequences of the UK’s departure from the EU for the individuals, scientific community and wider national network.
The panel participants are professor Sir Steve Smith (Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter), professor David Richardson (Vice-Chancellor of the University of East Anglia), director Vivienne Stern (Universities UK International), rector Jukka Mönkkönen (Chair of UNIFI), chancellor Kaarlo Hämeri (University of Helsinki) and the representative of National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL). The panel starts at 4 pm and is moderated by senior specialist Lauri Reuter (VTT). At the end of the discussion the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.
The UUK’s visit to Helsinki is part of a larger tour in Nordic countries. In addition to Finland the delegation will visit Sweden and Denmark. The tour takes place in the week when the European Council meets to agree on the outcome of UK-EU negotiations regarding the transition period after which the UK will leave the EU on March 29th 2019.
The UK is important partner to Finland in the EU’s Horizon 2020 framework programme. The research collaboration between the two countries is strong particularly in digitalization, biosciences and low carbon technologies. The UK is also a popular country among Finnish exchange students and researchers. During the academic year 2016–2017 there were 2 100 Finns studying in the UK.
